LESSON 30 – Perdere tempo?

1. A leading firm dealing in clean rooms and other high tech stuff has chosen a very unfortunate English name for itself: ASSING. Evidently no one ever pointed out to these people that ASSING AROUND in the States, or ARSING AROUND in the UK means wasting time, effing about, etc…!

‘taliano: Una società d’avanguardia nel settore delle camere pulite ed altri prodotti di alta tecnologia ha scelto per nome: ASSING, probabilmente senza sapere che in inglese esiste l’espressione, to ass around (USA ) to arse around (UK) che significa letteramente: fare cazzate, perdere tempo..!
2. In many leaflets describing Italy’s delightful countryside, romantic places are invariably described as being: SUGGESTIVE. … The dirty devils…!

Full of charm, oppure charming, andrebbe cchiu meglio…!
3. The adjective PRESTIGIOUS is also used lavishly in translations (in particular in Naples) to describe anything that stands out just ever so slightly above the crap level.

4. Likewise in Spaghetti English the OLD CITY CENTRE is invariably translated as the HISTORICAL CENTRE, from the Italian, CENTRO STORICO. … and there’s no way of getting it over to the “translators” that historical centres don’t exist in English cities.

‘taliano: I traduttori insistono col tradurre CENTRO STORICO in HISTORICAL CENTRE – quest’è Spaghetti English (vedi Spaghetti Westerns).
5. Via dei Mille, Naples: sign over a gents outfitters: CRUISING

6. In a leaflet describing a day trip to the Island of Capri, participants are informed that they will: TRANSFER TO THE HARBOUR FOR THE SHIPMENT… One wonders if they will be suitably packaged first or shipped as loose cargo…?

(transfer to port and embark for Capri)
7. The Ministry of the Interior now issues non – EU citizens with a PERMIT TO STAY instead of the old, Sojourn Permit. …must have something to do with airport car parks…?

8. A leaflet describing sightseeing tours around Naples, indicates that certain trips are “ON RESERVATION”, instead of available only via advanced booking… they don’t add details regarding which Native American Tribe has given the organizers permission to use their reservation.
